7-year-old girl dies in crash involving vehicle pursued by police

A 7-year-old girl was killed on Wednesday night when the vehicle she was riding in was struck by a vehicle involved in a chase with Kansas City, Kan., Police.

A Kansas Highway Patrol report identified the victim as Jasmine Rodriguez of Kansas City, Kan.

The highway patrol report said Rodriguez's vehicle was struck by a Chevy Impala driving northbound on 63rd Street which ran a red light at Leavenworth Road.

The driver of the Impala, Tyrone Murphy, 27, of Kansas, was placed in police custody and taken to a hospital.

Rodriguez's mother, Jacqueline, was taken to a hospital, along with her two siblings.

"It sounded like gunshots almost, and so I rushed out of my work and when I got out here, it was a car accident," one witness said.

It wasn't immediately known why police were pursuing Murphy.

Wednesday night's crash was the fourth deadly crash in the Kansas City metro involving a police chase in the past year.
