Camano Island, WA : 2 children killed in Camano Island crash on Tuesday morning, December 13, 2016

A Camano Island mother remains hospitalized after a vehicle she was driving Tuesday morning struck a tree in icy road conditions, killing her two young daughters, authorities said.

The 2002 Dodge Caravan was heading northbound on North Sunrise Boulevard shortly before 7:40 a.m. when it went over an embankment, hit the tree head on and caught fire, according to a Washington State Patrol news release.

Sgt. Mark Francis said the vehicle went off the roadway because of icy conditions.

The two children, a 5-month-old and a 3-year-old, were pronounced dead at the scene, troopers said.

Medics airlifted the 23-year-old mother to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle, troopers said. She remained in serious condition there Tuesday afternoon, according to hospital spokeswoman Susan Gregg.

No further details were immediately available.

Shortly after the incident, a woman, saying she’s a good friend of the 23-year-old, started raising money for the family online. On the fundraiser’s page, which was nearly half way to its goal of $20,000 by Tuesday evening, she said the 23-year-old woman broke both her legs and suffered injuries to her pelvis and burns in the crash.

“There is so much pain in our hearts right now,” the woman wrote.

On that page and social media, people throughout the day expressed their condolences for the family.

“Please keep all involved in your thoughts and prayers,” Camano Island Fire and Rescue posted on Facebook.
