MOULTRIE, GA : Victim in wheelchair crash identified on Friday, March 3rd 2017
Colquitt County Deputy Coroner Kevin Wimberly identified the victim of a Friday accident as Whitley Kirk, 60, of Fifth Avenue Southeast.
Kirk, the driver of a motorized wheelchair, was killed Friday afternoon when he rolled into the path of a driver on a busy Moultrie roadway.
Traffic was heavy at about 3:40 p.m. on First Avenue Southeast when the man tried to navigate across the five lanes -- two traffic lanes in each direction and center turn lane -- Georgia State Patrol Sgt. Jeff Culpepper said.
“The wheelchair driver was attempting to cross First Avenue,” Culpepper said. “He was coming from the Farmer’s Market traveling south. He was attempting to cross into a private (business) drive.”
After the man on the motorized wheelchair made it across the two west-bound lanes, he stopped momentarily in the turn lane before again heading south into the other two lanes, Culpepper said.
“He was struck in the outside lane of the east-bound lanes,” Culpepper said.
After the 1986 El Camino struck the wheelchair, its rider was ejected and his wheelchair came to rest at the curb, said Culpepper.
Danny Atmore, 42, of Moultrie does not face any charges in connection with the accident, Culpepper added.
“It is not prosecutable,” he said. “No impairment is suspected.”
The Moultrie Police Department requested the GSP’s assistance in the investigation of the fatality, he said.
