Jamestown, ND : Driver in Tuesday's crash dies on Wednesday, 24th August, 2016
The driver of a vehicle rear-ended in a construction zone Tuesday in Divide County has died, according to the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
Lesley Gunderson, 31, Noonan, N.D., died from his injuries on Wednesday, the patrol said. Two passengers, Shelly Gunderson, 8, and Shayleigh Gunderson, 2, died in the crash on Tuesday. Shelton Gunderson, 4, was injured.
The accident occurred at around 6:25 p.m. on N.D. Highway 5, about 3 miles east of Crosby. Gunderson was driving east in a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria when he stopped for a construction zone. Gunderson was speaking to the flagger, Anna McKeigan, 51, Minot, when an eastbound 2016 GMC Sierra driven by William Koehler, 49, Chiefland, Fla., rear-ended the Ford, causing both vehicles to overturn into a ditch, the patrol said.
Lesley and Shelton Gunderson were airlifted by NorthStar Criticair to Trinity Health in Minot. Both were wearing seat belts, the patrol said, as was Shelly, and Shayleigh was restrained.
Koehler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was injured but not transported for treatment. McKeigan was struck by debris and injured but not transported for treatment, the patrol said.
The accident remains under investigation, said Sgt. Kevin Huston, with the North Dakota Highway Patrol.
