BLOUNT COUNTY, AL : 5 people were involved in a two-vehicle crash on May, Wednesday, 24th 2017

Officials have confirmed that a total of 5 people were involved in a two-vehicle crash. One car contained an adult male driver who was transported to the hospital.

The second car contained an adult female driver and three children.

One child was pronounced dead.

Another child suffering life-threatening injuries and an infant were both transported to the hospital. The adult female driver was airlifted to UAB Hospital.

“We couldn’t move them when we seen the kids, you know? It was really really a bad thing to see them that little, you know?” said Leonard Kirkland. He lives on the outside of the curve on Highway 79 where the crash happened.

“I had just come in, was in the back of the house. I heard it. Boy, it was loud, so I knew something got hit. So I go out the front door. I seen where it was and I just tore right on out there,” he said.

Kirkland said when he got to the cars, he could see people inside were seriously injured.

“And the lady was hollering, you know, ‘Help my kids!'” he explained.

But the doors were jammed shut and locked so he couldn’t open them.

“Luckily a gentleman stopped right immediately, you know, and I called 9-1-1, first thing I done. And he jumped out with a little tire tool or something he had and beat the window in on the right-hand side where you could get in there and unlock the doors,” Kirkland said.

But even then, there wasn’t much they could do.

First responders arrived minutes later.
