La Grande, OR : Driver died after a fatal head-on crash on Oregon 82, near Island City on Monday morning, Oct 5, 2015

Oregon State Police are investigating a fatal head-on crash Monday morning on Oregon 82, northeast of La Grande.

Police said emergency crews were dispatched to Milepost 5, near Island City, at 6:40 a.m. after receiving a report of a crash. Arriving crews found a Dodge Durango pickup and a tractor-trailer rig had collided head-on and still were in the roadway.

The driver of the Dodge Durango was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck driver was not injured. The pickup driver's name will be released after next of kin are notified, police said.

Preliminary information indicates a Dodge Durango was traveling west on the highway when it crossed over the centerline for unknown reasons and struck an eastbound truck.

Oregon 82 was shut down for more than four hours, with intermittent openings for a single lane of traffic.

State police are being assisted by the Union County Sheriff's Office, Oregon Department of Transportation, Island City Fire Department and La Grande Fire Department.
