Duval County, FL : 59-year-old man, 2 injured in fatal crash involving 3 tractor-trailers, 2 vehicles on Interstate 95 in Duval County early Monday morning, May 11, 2015
A fatal crash involving five vehicles closed Interstate 95 in Duval County early Monday morning for several hours.
The crash closed all northbound lanes south of Old St. Augustine Road around 3:30 a.m. Traffic was detoured to County Road 210 for about 7 hours.
The Florida Highway Patrol said the crash involved three tractor-trailers, a car and an SUV.
A tractor-trailer lost control when it hit debris in the roadway, which disabled its brakes, FHP said. The tractor-trailer stopped a short distance ahead, and wasn't involved in the crash.
Another tractor-trailer tried to avoid the debris and jackknifed across northbound I-95, and an SUV drove underneath it, FHP said. The man driving the SUV, 59-year-old Charles Campbell, was killed.
The Florida Department of Transportation received a call about the debris and a contractor was sent to remove it. However, the crash had already occurred by the time the contractor arrived.
A third tractor-trailer did not hit the jackknifed trailer, but hit a stopped car. Two people in the vehicle were taken to the hospital, but are expected to be OK, FHP said.
"That truck driver did everything he could possible to avoid the issue altogether and successfully did so until he reached the other side," FHP Sgt. Dylan Bryan.
Charges are pending due to the investigation.
