Oakland ,CA : Teen dies after car crashes into funeral home on Monday night ,July 20th 2015
A car driving "significantly faster" than the speed limit crashed into a funeral home Monday night, killing a teenage passenger and hospitalizing one pedestrian, police said.
Authorities identified the teenage boy as 17-year-old Deshawn Rabon of Oakland. Police said he was a passenger in the back seat of a speeding Toyota Solara that crashed into Fouche's Hudson Funeral Home in the 3600 block of Telegraph Avenue just before 10 p.m.
The Toyota's driver and at least two other passengers ran from the scene, and police still were looking for them Tuesday, Oakland police spokeswoman Officer Johnna Watson said. Police also were determining whether a female pedestrian injured at the scene was struck by the car or by debris from the crash, Watson said.
An ambulance transported the pedestrian to a hospital, but information about her condition was not available.
Several witnesses told police the crash happened after the Toyota was spotted speeding south on Telegraph Avenue for several blocks. The car tried to move right from one lane to another when it lost control and plowed into the funeral home, Watson said.
The posted speed limit on that stretch of Telegraph Avenue is 25 mph. Watson said the Toyota was "going significantly faster than that. We think it was going at least double, if not triple" the speed limit.
The car also hit several palm trees and took out some parking meters, rolling at least one time before hitting a rock wall and a walkway railing, Watson said. The teen was not wearing his seat belt, and police believe that contributed to his death.
"We want to hear from witnesses or anybody who may have recorded it with their cell phone," Watson said. "We'd also like businesses in the area who may have security cameras to check their tapes and contact us if the tapes show any part of it."
