One person is dead after a two-car crash in Nashua.
Part of a Broad Street was closed between Tilton and Natick streets after the crash, which occurred about 1:25 p.m.The force of the impact sent one of the vehicles up onto a sidewalk.
Police continue to investigate the crash, which shut down part of busy Broad Street for hours.
Witnesses said several people jumped into action to try and help.
"I heard the sound and immediately knew it was a car accident,” said Robert Rella.
Some who heard the crash said it felt as if their house shook.
Both cars involved were badly damaged and both drivers were trapped.
“Both occupants, one in each vehicle, were trapped, and we had to use the extrication equipment to get both occupants out,” said Deputy Chief Kevin Kerrigan, of the Nashua Fire Department.
Before emergency crews arrived, several other drivers and neighbors tried to to help, one grabbing a hammer to smash a window of one of the cars involved as the doors were locked.
“A couple of people were just trying to get in, trying to get into the back seat, maybe to recline the seat that the woman was on,” Rella said.
Witnesses said someone opened the glove box to find out the driver’s name so they could talk to her and let her know she wasn't alone, holding her hand until firefighters arrived.
“Everyone was trying to do what they could and somebody, a bystander, happened by who knew CPR, and he was trying to do what he could to help her,” Rella said.
“That was continued through the extrication process as well as on the way to the hospital,” Kerrigan said.
No one else was in either vehicle.
Because of the severity of the crash, trauma teams were activated for both victims.
Police are not identifying which driver was killed until their family is notified.
“When bad thing happen, that's when people sometimes get together,” Rella said. “And it brings out some of the best in folks.”
