SPARTANBURG COUNTY, SC : 16-year-old takes mother’s car; crashes after chase injuring 3, deputies say on Monday, 19th September 2016
Spartanburg, South Carolina
An Upstate woman has asked that charges be brought against her 16-year-old son who took her car and crashed it after a brief police chase, leaving him and two others injured, according to the Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies were called Monday by a man who said he saw a black Chevy SUV in a neighbor’s driveway on Pine Street that did not belong there, and that the neighbor’s two children were hiding in the woods near the SUV. The man said he told the children to come out of the woods, and when they did, one boy told the man that he knew the people in the SUV.
The man said that after he told the boy to get his father, the boy walked up to the SUV and spoke to the driver. The man said the SUV then backed up and rammed his Dodge truck before it drove away. The owner estimated the damage to the truck at about $1,000.
A deputy spoke to the neighbor who tried to get his children to tell deputies who was driving the Chevy SUV, but the children were “completely uncooperative.”
A deputy went to the home where the registered owner of the SUV lives. A woman there told the deputy that he underage son had taken her SUV without her knowledge or permission.
The woman said her son claimed to be in Greenville County, and he refused to return the SUV. She told the deputy that she wanted to pursue charges against her son.
A be-on-the-alert was issued for the SUV, and another deputy spotted it and tried to pull it over. The deputy said that as he walked up to the vehicle, the driver pulled away. After about a 30-second chase, the SUV left the road suddenly and crashed into a tree in a field.
The driver and the passengers, 14 and 22 years old, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The driver was charged with taking a vehicle without the owner’s consent, malicious injury to personal property, failure to stop for blue lights and no South Carolina driver’s license. Any additional charges in connection with the crash will come from the Highway Patrol.
