Topeka, KS : Semi driver hospitalized after rollover crash in Topeka on Tuesday, December 2, 2014
The driver of a semi-trailer was hospitalized Tuesday morning after the vehicle he was driving slid off a roadway and into a deep ravine in southern Shawnee County, authorities said.
The accident was reported at 10:45 a.m. in the 1600 block of S.E. 93rd.
Shawnee County Sheriff’s Cpl. Tim Kampsen said at the scene the accident occurred as a Freightliner semi-trailer that was hauling a load of dry fertilizer was traveling west on S.E. 93rd between S.E. California and S.E. Adams. The rig was headed to US-75 highway, Kampsen said.
For unknown reasons, the 18-wheeler left the two-lane road to the right — or north — side and slid approximately 45 feet on its passenger side down a steep ravine, Kampsen said.
Rescue crews from the Shawnee Heights Fire District were called upon to extricate the semi’s driver from the cab of his tractor.
The driver, whose name wasn’t immediately available, was taken by American Medical Response ambulance to Stormont-Vail Regional Health Center. His injuries included a cut to his head and bruising to his face. Kampsen said the injuries weren’t believed to be life-threatening.
Sheriff’s officials said the rig was owned by Lone Pine Ag Services out of Lecompton.
Shawnee County public works crews put up temporary barricades to block traffic on S.E. 93rd between S.E. California and S.E. Adams as the crash site was being cleared.
A heavy-duty tow truck from Brown’s Super Service was summoned and was preparing to pull the semi-trailer out of the ravine at 12:30 p.m. Crews remained on the scene as of 1:35 p.m.
Sheriff’s deputies, Shawnee Heights firefighters and AMR ambulance personnel all responded to the scene.
