ENGLEWOOD, FL : Englewood man dead, Venice family hurt in crash on Saturday, January 28th 2017

An Englewood man died Saturday evening when he ran a stop sign and was hit by another vehicle, the Florida Highway Patrol reports. Dead is Thomas Stapleton, 58.

According to reports, Stapleton was traveling north at 5:10 p.m. on South Oxford Drive, approaching East Dearborn Street, when he failed to stop for a stop sign.

His Mazda B4000 pickup truck was struck by a Ford Fusion driven by Denise Tapalaga, 43, of Venice, who was traveling north on East Dearborn Street. Stapleton's truck spun and flipped onto its roof.

Stapleton died in the accident.

Denise Tapalaga suffered serious injuries and was taken to Sarasota Memorial Hospital. Her two passengers, Matthew Tapalaga, 9, and Kevin Tapalaga, 11, suffered critical injuries and were transported to All Children's Hospital.

The accident remains under investigation.
