Mesa, AZ : Woman killed after rush hour collision on U.S. Highway 60 in Mesa on Tuesday morning, February 24, 2015
A woman died after she was ejected from her car in a rollover crash that closed westbound U.S. Highway 60 in Mesa for nearly three hours on Tuesday morning, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.
The westbound lanes reopened about 9:45 a.m., an Arizona Department of Transportation spokesman said.
DPS spokesman Bart Graves said the fatality was confirmed and that an earlier DPS statement that she was alive was made as she was taken to a Chandler hospital before she was pronounced dead.
A Mesa Fire and Medical spokesman initially reported the woman had died.
The woman's vehicle was one of three involved in the collision about 7 a.m. at Greenfield Road, Graves said.
Two vehicles sideswiped each other, causing the woman to lose control of her vehicle. It rolled and struck a concrete wall on the right side of the freeway, Graves said.
The crash closed three lanes westbound U.S. 60 from Higley Road to Loop 202 during the heavy morning commute before all westbound traffic was re-routed.
No one else was injured.
Drivers exiting westbound U.S. 60 at Greenfield were able to re-enter U.S. 60 at the Greenfield entrance ramp, but other drivers were encouraged to enter at Val Vista Drive further west, the ADOT spokesman said.
As an alternate route, westbound drivers were encouraged to use Loop 202.
Delays extended five miles to Loop 202, ADOT said.
No other information was available.
