Webster City, IA : St. Edmond teacher dies in crash in Hamilton County on Tuesday morning, March 14, 2017
A Fort Dodge woman who was a longtime St. Edmond Catholic School teacher died in a one-vehicle accident Tuesday morning near Webster City.
She was identified as Michelle Salter, 54.
Salter was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to Hamilton County Sheriff Doug Timmons, Salter’s vehicle left the roadway and struck a bridge.
Salter was a fifth-grade teacher at St. Edmond Catholic School in Fort Dodge, according to an announcement sent to families of St. Edmond by Principal Linda Mitchell.
According to Mitchell, Salter had been a St. Edmond teacher for 26 years.
St. Edmond is on spring break. Mitchell said counselors will be available when school resumes on Monday.
A preliminary investigation by the Iowa State Patrol indicates that the 1993 Chevy Lumina minivan Salter was driving was headed eastbound on U.S. Highway 20 when the driver, for unknown reasons, lost control of the vehicle, entered the right ditch and collided head-on into a concrete bridge pillar.
The single-car accident occurred late Tuesday morning at the 147.40 mile marker east bound on U.S. Highway 20.
According to a press release from the Iowa State Patrol, the accident happened at 11:41 a.m. Tuesday morning.
Salter was alone in the vehicle, according to Timmons.
The Iowa State Patrol and Hamilton County sheriff’s office were assisted at the scene by the Webster City Fire Department, Williams Fire and Rescue, Van Diest Medical Center Rescue and Iowa Department of Transportation Maintenance and Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
An investigation into the accident is being conducted by the Iowa State Patrol.
