Oakland, CA : DUI suspect arrested in multi-car I-580 crash that killed minivan driver on Monday night, November 24, 2014
A suspected DUI driver triggered a fiery pileup Monday night on Interstate 580 that killed one person, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers were called to westbound I-580, just after the Fruitvale Avenue exit, for a report of a four-car crash with major injuries, CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld said.
The incident happened about 11:30 p.m., when a vehicle struck a green Toyota Camry abandoned in lane 3 on the freeway, Wilkenfeld said.
Shortly after, two other vehicles -- a green S70 Volvo and a white 1998 Dodge Caravan -- crashed into the wreck. The impact caused the Caravan to catch fire, killing the driver, Wilkenfeld said.
As the fire burned, the driver of the Volvo got out of the car and ran from the scene. As of Tuesday police continued to search for that person.
A traffic alert was issued at 11:44 p.m. stating that all lanes were closed while emergency crews worked to clear the roadway.
The freeway had been clogged about 90 minutes earlier as protesters angry about a Missouri grand jury's decision not to indict a police officer who shot and killed an unarmed 18-year-old walked up an off-ramp and brought traffic to a standstill in both directions.
The dead driver's identity was being withheld until family can be notified, an Alameda County Coroner's office spokesman said Tuesday.
The suspected drunken driver of the Camry, 40-year-old Joe Brown, of Oakland, was taken into custody, officials said. Officers had reopened all lanes of traffic by 3:40 a.m.
