Fort Wayne, IN : City man faces OWI charges in fatal car crash on Tuesday, 3rd March, 2020

A Fort Wayne man is charged with running a red light as he tore down South Clinton Street while driving drunk, causing the death of another man.

Khiry H. Johnson, 29, of the 2900 block of Witchwood Drive, was charged Monday with causing death while operating a vehicle while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license and reckless homicide.

According to court records, on Sept. 21, Johnson was driving his 2014 Kia Sorrento south on South Clinton about 3:15 a.m. when he ran a red light at East Wallace Street, colliding with a 2008 gray Chevy Cobalt going west on East Wallace.

Michael Dewitt Stevenson, 44, was thrown from the Cobalt and died at a hospital as a result of the injuries he received in the crash, authorities said.

Johnson was found in the driver's seat of his car and taken to a hospital for treatment. About 4 a.m., court records said, his blood-alcohol level tested at 0.19%, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08%.

Video taken from a nearby business shows Johnson running the red light at a speed calculated by police of 61 mph where posted speed limits are between 30 and 35 mph, court records said.
