COLUMBUS, OH : A former Ohio State gymnast and Carmel native has died on April, thursday 13th 2017

COLUMBUS, Ohio (WBNS) - A former Ohio State gymnast and Carmel native has died after he was struck by a tractor trailer last week in North Columbus.

Columbus Police say that Larry Mayer lost control of his vehicle early last Thursday morning at I-71 and I-270 in north Columbus, driving off the roadway and down an embankment, according to our sister station in Columbus, WBNS.

Police believe that Mayer exited his car and began walking along the freeway. He was struck by a tractor trailer around 3am.

Police say Mayer succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at Grant Medical Center Monday afternoon.

Mayer was a two-time Academic All Big Ten Athlete and three-time Ohio State Scholar Athlete.

Mayer was from Carmel and active at DeVeau's School of Gymnastics.

His family has set up a GoFundMe account to help cover his final expenses, if you would like to contribute.
