Lansing, MI :Onaway teen dies in vehicle crash on Thursday, November, 30th 2017
A 17-year-old Onaway girl died Thursday morning as the result of a traffic accident in Cheboygan County.
According to a press release from the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office, Alexia LaHaie was traveling westbound on M-68 when the 2007 Ford Fusion she was driving crossed sideways into an oncoming vehicle due to icy road conditions. She was hit by a 1998 Isuzu box truck driven by Arteen Stout, 26, of Prudenville. LaHaie was pronounced dead at the scene.
“This is a very tragic accident that took the life of a promising young lady,” Sheriff Dale Clarmont stated in a press release. “Alexia’s family and school have been notified and at this time our thoughts and prayers are with her family and classmates.”
Stout received minor injuries and was released after being treated at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital Cheboygan Campus.
“Mr. Stout provided a statement as to what occurred and he could not avoid the accident. He was very shook up. We had his family come up and assist him in coping with the situation,” Clarmont said.
M-68 was closed for seven hours and rerouted while the investigation took place at the scene.
“At this time we believe there are no other factors that contributed to the accident but the investigation is ongoing,” Clarmont said.
Assisting the sheriff’s department was the Emmet County Sheriff’s Department Accident Investigation Team, the Michigan State Police, Forest Waverly Fire Department, Tuscarora Township Fire Department and Cheboygan County Life Support System.
