SAN ANTONIO, TX : Pickup, dump truck head-on collision kills 2 in South Bexar County on Friday, 30th September 2016
A collision between a dump truck and a white pickup on the far South Side left two dead and three injured Friday afternoon.
Police responded to an accident at U.S. 281 South and FM 1937 at 4:30 p.m. to find the two vehicles, shredded, in opposing ditches, with parts from each truck strewn across the small, two-lane country road.
The two vehicles apparently clipped each other head-on, said SAPD Sgt. Trey Roussel. The impact killed the pickup driver, an adult male, and a 12-year-old boy in the passenger seat. The three passengers in the rear of the truck were all critically injured. One of the three, a 2-year-old boy, was flung out of his booster seat and landed in a ditch, police said. That child suffered a compound leg fracture and is in critical condition. The other two victims, a 32-year-old woman an an 11-year-old boy, had to be extracted from the pickup and were airlifted to University Hospital with internal injuries, along with the 2-year old.
Roussel said the white pickup was southbound on FM 1937 when it started weaving into the lane of the oncoming, northbound dump truck. The dump truck driver allegedly slowed down and tried to pull as far to the right as possible all while carrying a heavy load but was unable to avoid the white pickup after the pickup swerved into the wrong lane a second time, he said.“Each vehicle’s front, left corner just clipped, but it was enough to send the (pickup) rolling into the ditch,” Roussel said. “The dump truck pretty much ripped the front side off of the smaller car.”
The driver of the dump truck was transported to the hospital with a minor leg injury.
Police have no reason to believe that alcohol was involved in the crash, though one officer said investigators believe that “driver distraction” was a factor in the white pickup swerving in and out of its lane.
Area resident Yvonne Gonzalez said she didn’t see the collision, but isn’t surprised that it happened.
“I’ve lived here for a while, and there have always been accidents down this road,” she said.
