Woodland,CA : Fiery head-on crash north of Woodland claims 6 people on January, Sunday 7th 2018
Six people were killed early Sunday morning as a result of a fiery head-on car crash on Interstate-5 just north of the town of Yolo and about five miles north of Woodland.
The California Highway Patrol reported the accident occurred at 12:30 a.m. None of those who died have as yet been identified.
According to the CHP, officers learned of a wrong-way driver who was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I-5 and were responding to the scene when they were told of the crash.
Witnesses reported a 2013 Chevrolet was traveling south in the left lane of I-5, just north of County Road 17 near Yolo at the same time, a 2013 Dodge was traveling northbound in the left lane of I-5.
There were three women and two men in the Dodge and a single driver in the Chevrolet, which the CHP reported was a woman from North Highlands.
It was unknown how fast the vehicles were traveling, but as a result of the crash both vehicles burst into flames with all five occupants of the Dodge dying as a result of their injuries at the scene along with the woman driving the Chevrolet.
A man who came upon the accident shortly after it occurred told the Democrat that he spoke to a trucker who actually saw the crash.
Jeremy Morgan of Woodland said he was at the Denny’s Restaurant on West Street, which is on the south side of I-5, and saw the CHP units enroute to the accident. He got curious and went out to investigate.
Morgan reported that he spoke with people at the scene and learned the white-colored Chevrolet had been traveling south toward Woodland when it crossed the median and struck the gray-colored Dodge.
Morgan said a trucker “described an instant deafening boom as the two cars really didn’t even move from the impact. (They) just burst into flames. He said he and another trucker stopped and grabbed their onboard fire extinguishers and attempted to break the glass to get them (the people) out. Regrettably, this didn’t work.”
Morgan said the trucker was quite distraught. He noted the trucker also reported the Chevrolet to be swerving around erratically before the crash.
“He also reported a third vehicle that he said appeared to be accompanying the white Chevrolet,” Morgan related, “as they were apparently toying with each other, swerving and driving side by side. He said the vehicle continued on and did not stop.”
The CHP reported the collision remains under investigation, and it is unknown if alcohol and/or drugs are a factor in this collision.
