An early morning one-vehicle wreck in Lauderdale County Saturday left one dead and four others injured with a sixth person refusing treatment.
Alabama State Troopers said Devin A. Harrison, 19, of Killen was driving a 2002 Ford F150 truck when the accident occurred at 3:45 a.m. on Lauderdale 3, 10 miles north of Waterloo.
Harrison was taken to Eliza Coffee Memorial Hospital for treatment.
Passenger Megan Renee Smith, 20, of Waterloo was pronounced dead at the scene.
Lauderdale County Deputy Coroner Mike Bishop said Smith's body was transported to the Huntsville Forensic Science Lab for an autopsy.
Other injured passengers were Jason P. Langston, 19; William D. Goins, 18; and Billy J. Hill, 19, all of Florence. Also injured was Lauren Foster, 18, of Waterloo.
Emergency workers on the scene said Luke Akers, 18, of Killen was also a passenger but refused treatment at the scene.
Troopers said none of the individuals were wearing seatbelts.
Waterloo Fire Chief Ted Kavich said Hill and Goins were flown by Air Evac to Northeast Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo, Mississippi, where they were undergoing surgery Saturday morning for internal injuries.
"It was pretty much mass pandamonium at the scene," Kavich said. "(Harrison) appeared to have lost control of the vehicle and hit a tree. Three people had to be extracted from the vehicle."
Troopers said the wreck remains under investigation.
Central Volunteer Fire Department, as well as Walnut Grove Volunteer Fire Department from Hardin County, Tennessee, assisted.
