Davis, CA : Youmans in critical condition following cycling accident on Highway 1 in Sonoma County on Friday evening, July 15, 2016
Longtime Davis resident John Youmans was in critical condition at the UC Davis Medical Center Saturday following a bicycle crash on Highway 1 in Sonoma County on Friday evening.
California Highway Patrol Sgt. Andrew Henkens told the Santa Rosa Press Democrat that Youmans crashed at about 5:05 p.m. on Friday while traveling northbound on Highway 1 between the Russian River bridge and the town of Jenner. He hit the wall of a steep embankment at a slight curve in a mainly straight stretch of the highway, the Press Democrat reported.
An initial witness told CHP officers that Youmans may have been struck by a hit-and-run driver, but evidence at the scene indicated Youmans may have crashed on his own, according to the Press-Democrat. The CHP has asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to contact them at 707-551-4100.
Youmans, 59, his brothers and father own the Hallmark Inn in downtown Davis — as well as other local properties — and have long been lauded for their contributions to the community. Over the years the family has partnered with many community groups and organizations to raise funds for a variety of causes.
John Youmans is a graduate of both Davis High School and UC Davis and is married to Rose Cholewinski, owner of SwimAmerica.
Following the crash on Friday, Youmans was taken to Santa Rosa Memorial Hospital and was later transferred to the UC Davis Medical Center where a spokesman on Saturday evening said he remained in critical condition.
