Anchorage, AK : Driver dead after truck crashes and burns on Interior highway on Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

A fiery crash Wednesday evening on the Steese Highway near Circle left a driver dead, according to Alaska State Troopers, who are asking for information from the public as they investigate.

Troopers said in an online dispatch that they were called at about 5:15 p.m. Wednesday to the scene of "an apparent single-vehicle motor vehicle crash" involving what appeared to be a large pickup, at Mile 155 of the 161-mile highway between Fairbanks and Circle.

"The truck was consumed by fire and was still smoldering," troopers wrote. "The complainant reported that the remains of one person were inside the truck."

An investigation by troopers suggested that the truck's driver lost control and drove into a ditch on the highway's west side, the dispatch said. That impact caused only minimal damage, however.

"At some point after the truck went into the ditch it caught fire," troopers wrote. "The fire destroyed the vehicle and apparently caused the death of the driver."

Neither the driver's identity nor the vehicle's identification number and registration details have been determined, troopers said. The State Medical Examiner Office will conduct an autopsy.

Anyone with information on the death is asked to call the Fairbanks trooper post at 907-451-5100.
