Anne Arundel County, MD : Shady Side man injured in south county crash on Saturday, Sep 12, 2015

Anne Arundel County police said a Shady Side man was critically injured Saturday during a single-vehicle crash in south county.

Police and fire personnel responded at 11:10 a.m. to Muddy Creek Road, near Old Sudley Road, where they found James Harford Smith, 80, had been ejected from his vehicle.

Investigators learned Smith had been driving a black Honda CRV northbound on Muddy Creek Road when it left the right side of the roadway and struck a pole, police said. The vehicle rotated and struck a tree, ejecting Smith, police said.

Police said Smith suffered from numerous medical conditions which may have contributed to the crash.

Smith was flown with critical injuries to University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, police said. He was listed in critical condition Monday afternoon, a hospital spokeswoman said.

The incident remains under investigation.
