De Soto, IA : A truck driver was killed when he lost control of the truck at Highway 82 On Tuesday, July 12th, 2016

A truck driver was killed in Vernon County on Tuesday when he lost control of the truck and it overturned in a field.

The crash happened at about 3:30 p.m. on Highway 82 near West Prairie, about eight miles east of De Soto, the Sheriff's Office said.

The driver had to be extricated from the truck; he was taken by medical helicopter to Gundersen Health System in La Crosse where he was pronounced dead.

Police said the Town and Country Sanitation truck was eastbound on Highway 82 when the driver lost control after negotiating a right-handed curve. The truck went off the right side of the road into a field and overturned.

Town and Country Sanitation is a refuse and recycling company serving areas of southwest Wisconsin and northeast Iowa.

The driver's name was withheld pending notification of family.

Assisting at the scene were the Viroqua, De Soto and Wheatland Fire Departments, Tri-State Ambulance and Med-Link Air.

The crash remains under investigation.

This was the second traffic fatality in Vernon County in 2016.
