Fort Myers, FL : Cape off-duty officer in crash, suspended on Saturday, December 3rd, 2016

An off-duty officer crashed her vehicle into a home early Saturday, badly injuring herself and damaging a garage and two cars in it.

Cape Coral Police Department said in a release Monday that Officer Emily Zyvoloski, 33, has life-threatening injuries.

Police said the vehicle she was driving failed to take a left turn at a bend, crashing into a garage at 422 Nicholas Parkway East, damaging two vehicles parked in it and leaving structural damage to the home.

Police said charges are pending, and the crash is alcohol-related. Zyvoloski has been employed by the department since 2007 and will be placed on paid administrative leave.

"We hold ourselves and our officers to the highest standards of conduct, both on and off-duty," Chief Dave Newlan said. "This crash is being investigated just like any other would be under similar circumstances."

He said after the criminal investigation is complete, the department's professional standards bureau will investigate.
