Lowell, MA : Two critically injured in motorcycle crash in Lowell on Friday night, May 6, 2016

Two Crete residents were critically injured after a motorcycle crash Friday night just outside of Lowell.

A 74-year-old man and a 53-year-old woman suffered serious injuries in a single-vehicle accident on Route 2 just east of U.S. 41 at about 10 p.m. Friday.

What caused the crash isn't immediately known and is under investigation, Lake County Sheriff's Office spokesman Mark Back said. No other vehicles were involved.

The two were driving westbound on Route 2 when the motorcycle crossed the center line and crashed into the guardrail on the south side of the road, Back said. Both were thrown from the motorcycle upon impact.

"Upon the officer's arrival, he found both in critical condition and unresponsive," Back said.

They were taken to a local hospital, where they remain in critical condition, Back said. Their injuries were serious, he added, but it wasn't immediately known if they were life-threatening.

Investigators will reconstruct the crash to determine what caused it, and if speed or other factors contributed, he said. Such investigations typically take a few weeks.
