Jefferson City, MO : Man injured in motorcycle crash in Miller County on Wednesday night, May 18, 2016
A Jefferson City man was treated for serious injuries after crashing his motorcycle Wednesday night while fleeing from authorities in Miller County.
Brandon Cavaness, 25, was arrested for resisting arrest and possession of marijuana.
Missouri Highway Patrol reports show the accident occurred at 7:38 p.m. on Woods Road, about a mile west of Dry Creek Road.
Cavaness attempted to negotiate a curve at a high speed and went off the edge of the road, striking a tree.
He was ejected from the motorcycle and was not wearing a safety device.
Court records show that in April, Cavaness was charged in a December 2015 burglary-stealing case in Cole County. Patrol reports show the incident occurred at a farm in the 6600 block of Old Bass Road. The property owner saw a shed door standing open and found his utility vehicle had been stolen.
An associate of Cavaness was found to have kept items stolen in other area theft cases at a camper next to railroad tracks in Eugene. The associate was arrested in Miller County and told authorities Cavaness was responsible for the theft of the utility vehicle on Old Bass Road.
Cavaness was attempting to sell the vehicle for cash or drugs.
Cavaness was also charged in April with possession of a controlled substance following a vehicle stop on Route BB near Eugene.
The driver of the vehicle, William Westfall, 21, of Eugene, later died after he ingested an unknown amount of methamphetamine at some time before the traffic stop. Westfall had also been charged with Cavaness in connection with the December 2015 burglary case.
