Bellevue, NE : One person killed in fatal hit-and-run crash on Thursday December 31 2015.
A Bellevue family will begin the new year without the man they've relied on for decades.
Dean Elder died Wednesday in a crash near 36th Street and Cedar Island Road.
Elder's daughter was behind the wheel; Christina Elder is still at Nebraska Medicine.
Family members say she has several broken ribs and a gash in her liver.
Even more painful – today, her family broke the news that her dad didn't make it.
He lived a better life than any of us,” said Janace Grover, Dean’s sister-in-law. “He had everything, but yet didn't have everything but he had everything that counted.”
Those who loved Dean Elder say he didn't have an easy life, but he took the life he had and lived it well.
He was that type of person that he'd do anything for you if you asked,” Grover said.
A father, husband and grandfather -- Dean's sister-in-law says he gave all he had to provide for his family, his wife Alice, his 11-year-old son Wayne, and his 21-year-old daughter Christina.
He trusted Christina. They could talk about anything. He trusted her driving,” Grover said.
Christina was driving her dad to work Wednesday morning when authorities say their car spun out in slippery conditions, and into the path of an oncoming car.
Thursday, it was Janace Grover who had to tell her niece that her dad didn't make it.
All she could do was say she was sorry. And I told her that she had nothing to do with this accident, it was the weather. She can't control what happens,” Grover said.
So now as she recovers, she'll have to lean on the lifetime of love he's given her already..
As parents, they are such loving parents. I don't think Wayne and Christina could ask for better parents,” Grover said.
