Roseburg, OR : Two former RHS students died in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 138E near Hatfield Drive on Wednesday night, June 24, 2015
Two former Roseburg High School students were killed in a single-vehicle crash on Highway 138E near Hatfield Drive on Wednesday night.
Shortly after 11 p.m. Wednesday, a 1999 Volkswagen Bug driven by 18-year-old Danica Christina Marie Schnaible was traveling west on Highway 138E near milepost 5.5 when the car swerved from the westbound lane for an unknown reason, struck an embankment on the south side of the highway before coming to rest on an eastbound lane of Highway 138E.
OSP did not immediately list a cause for the crash. Highway 138E was reduced to one lane near the crash for much of Thursday while authorities continued to investigate the crash.
Schnaible, who lived in Stanfield before moving to Roseburg, was pronounced dead at the scene. Her passenger, 21-year-old Kiona Cheyenne Siewell, died while being treated for injuries.
Roseburg High School Vice Principal Larry Rich said Schnaible graduated from RHS in 2013 and Siewell graduated in 2012.
The crash is the third fatal crash in four days, including another double fatality that killed a married couple on Melrose Road on Monday.
Oregon State Police investigated the crash, with assistance from the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, the Oregon Department of Transportation and Douglas County Fire District No. 2. Highway 138 was shut down for about four hours in both directions.
