NORWALK, CT : Westport man, 87, arrested after Norwalk crash on Wednesday, July 19, 2017
An 87-year-old Westport man turned himself in to Norwalk police Wednesday on a warrant with multiple motor vehicle charges related to a serious three-car crash on Washington Street in May.
Police said that at 11 a.m.Richard Montague was traveling on East Washington Street toward the four-way intersection of Washington and North Main Streets at a high rate of speed. According to witnesses, Montague ran a red light there, and came straight across the intersection while driving in the left turn only lane.
Montague's vehicle struck a BMW sedan that was stopped at the intersection and waiting to make a left turn onto East Washington Street. Police said the impact of that collision pushed the car into the path of a Lexus SUV which was passing the BMW on the right.
The driver of the BMW was trapped in the car and was found to be unresponsive with life-threatening injuries. Police said the driver of that car remains in a medical facility.
All three drivers were transported to Norwalk Hospital and all of the vehicles sustained significant damage. The intersection was closed for several hours.
Norwalk police accident reconstruction specialist Officer Chris Wasilewski and crime scene unit investigators analyzed the circumstances of the crash. Based on that investigation, a warrant for Montague's arrest was obtained.
Montague turned himself into Norwalk police headquarters accompanied by his attorney.
Montague, of Surf Road, Westport, was charged with reckless driving, operating a motor vehicle while under suspension, failure to obey traffic control signal, speeding, failure to carry license, failure to comply with state traffic commission registration and illegal use of special plate.
His bond was set at $1,500 and he was given a court date of July 26.
Police said that Montague's driver's license had been revoked for medical reasons and he had tried to retest several times.
