Hatfield,MA : 34 year-old man killed after car plunged into Connecticut River on August, Wednesday 30th 2017

A 34 year-old man is dead after his car plunged into the Connecticut River in Hatfield Wednesday night.

Mary Carey, spokesperson for the Northwestern District Attorney’s Office, identified the deceased as Mark Gilman of Hatfield.

Wednesday night, a witness told 22News they saw a sedan speeding down Bridge Lane at 70 mph before it launched into the Connecticut River in Hatfield. Carey confirmed that the car entered the water at a “high rate of speed” shortly before 7:00 P.M.

The vehicle was submerged in the water, and there was no report of anyone getting out of it. Carey said that members of the Massachusetts State Police Dive Team recovered Gilman’s body Wednesday night.

A large crane had been brought in to lift the vehicle out of the water, with the vehicle being pulled out of the river hours after the crash.

State Trooper Paul Sullivan said the State Police Air Wing, as well as the dive team, had assisted the Hatfield fire and police departments in the rescue and recovery efforts.

Hatfield police and state troopers are continuing to look into what led up to the incident.
