New Bern, NC : Truck flips into ditch near Thurman Road on Friday morning, July 29, 2016
A wreck off U.S. 70 east of New Bern sent five people to the hospital on Friday morning.
The crash happened shortly before 7 a.m. just west of Thurman Road in front of Brice's Creek Bible Church.
The wreck involved a Chevrolet Colorado crew cab pickup truck that was heading west on U.S. 70, ran off the road and flipped into the deep roadside ditch between the highway and service road. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
A relative of one of the victims said at the scene that the crash victims were banged up but that he believed they would all be OK. He said the group had gone camping Thursday night and that the driver had apparently fallen asleep while driving, causing the crash. He said all were wearing seat belts at the time of the crash.
N.C. Highway Patrol troopers were investigating and a report on the wreck was unavailable. The names of the victims and their conditions were not immediately available.
The impact broke out the front windshield of the truck and collapsed the roof. Blankets, water bottles and other materials were strewn along the path where the truck flipped.
Rescue personnel were on the scene for about an hour, and a two-truck arrived around 8:30 a.m., removing the truck from the ditch.
