Ascutney, VT : Westmoreland woman injured when her car hit by a tractor trailer on Interstate 91 on Monday afternoon, February 2, 2015
A Westmoreland woman was involved in a crash that injured a man and shut down a section of Interstate 91 in the area of Exit 7 for about three hours Monday afternoon.
Joanne Chickering, 24, was driving a 1999 Volkswagen Golf north on the highway when her car was hit by a tractor trailer, Vermont State Police said.
Chickering wasn't injured, according to a news release from police, but her car sustained rear left-side damage.
The crash, which happened shortly after 1 p.m., during the height of Monday's snowstorm, unfolded as follows, police said:
A Vermont Agency of Transportation plow truck, which was driven by Kevin Richardson, 56, of North Springfield, Vt., was traveling north in the left passing lane of Interstate 91 at about 25 to 30 miles per hour. A 2011 International tractor trailer, driven by Jeziah Chevalier, 20, of Springfield, Vt., was traveling behind the plow truck at about 60 miles per hour.
Chevalier said he couldn't see because of whiteout conditions, and hit the back of the plow truck. He then veered to the right, and struck Chickering's car, forcing it off the right shoulder of the highway.
The plow truck went off the left shoulder of the highway and rolled onto its left side.
Richardson was taken by ambulance to Springfield (Vt.) Hospital with back and neck injuries.
Vermont State Police issued a traffic ticket to Chevalier for following too closely.
