Tampa, FL : Three people were dead Sunday morning in a crash on a busy Interstate 275 on September 7th 2014
Three people were killed Sunday morning in a crash on a busy interstate.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, one driver was headed the wrong way on Interstate 275.
"When we arrived, we found that a motor vehicle had collided with a fuel truck," said Stephen Dachs, a state trooper.
Dachs said the truck driver was OK, but all three people in the car died.
Sunday's crash is the fourth deadly wreck this year, caused by a driver going the wrong direction in the Tampa area.
In February, Fort Myers native Jim Ilias, 20, died in I-275 with three of his friends, after their car was hit head-on by an SUV going the wrong way.
Less than two weeks later, a driver going the wrong way on I-275 hit a truck, and died.
In August, an ambulance was knocked on its side, after yet another car made an abrupt U-turn on I-275, into oncoming traffic. Officials said nobody was seriously hurt in the ambulance, which, at the time, was not transporting anyone to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was killed.
WINK News asked FHP if there was any correlation between the accidents on the same road.
A spokesman said all four deadly crashes involved drugs or alcohol.
"The roadways are designed properly with warning to drivers regarding traveling in the wrong direction to include signage and red reverse reflectors," said Sgt. Steve Gaskins. "Drugs and alcohol are the common factor that only the driver(s) can prevent."
While drugs or alcohol were linked to the previous three crashes, FHP is still looking into exactly what caused Sunday's accident.
