MAHAFFEY, PA : A former New Castle man was killed on Saturday, July 29, 2017

A former New Castle man was killed Saturday and a girl was injured in a side-by-side all-terrain vehicle crash in Clearfield County.

Michael Martone, 38, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash in Bell Township, Clearfield County. His 11-year-old passenger, a Florence, South Carolina, resident whose name was not released, was ejected from the vehicle and flown to UPMC Altoona Hospital with what police termed critical injuries. Her condition was not available.

State police said the accident happened along Rock Springs Road just after 2 p.m. Saturday. Martone was eastbound on the road when he failed to negotiate a left-hand turn. His Gator xuv 590 crossover utility vehicle began to spin on a downward slope, left the road and struck an embankment, causing it to roll. It came to rest on its side, landing on top of Martone.

Police said speed was a factor in the crash.
