Two people were transported to the hospital with serious injuries following a Santa Clarita Valley crash Monday morning on the southbound Interstate 5 north of Templin Highway.
At approximately 3:33 a.m., a 1992 Nissan was traveling southbound on the interstate when it collided with the rear of a 1998 Chevrolet Suburban, according to a report from the California Highway Patrol. The crash pushed the Chevrolet off the left side of the roadway. The vehicle overturned down a dirt embankment.
Hector Sierra, 59, of Bakersfield, the driver of the Chevrolet, was transported by helicopter to Henry Mayo Newhall Hospital with major injuries, according to the CHP report. Daniel Perez, 24, of Granada Hills, the driver of the Nissan, was transported by ambulance with moderate injuries.
The southbound freeway was shut down at approximately 4:01 a.m. so a Los Angeles County Fire Department helicopter could land.
All but one lane reopened at 4:44 a.m.
The collision remains under investigation.
