CECILTON, MD : Driver in fatal Cecilton crash on Monday, January, 29th 2018

Investigators have released the names of the two Cecilton men involved in a fatal single-vehicle crash in that town on Sunday, identifying the victim as Larry W. Thompson Sr. and driver who escaped without injury as Larry Midash.

Thompson, 66, was pronounced dead by county paramedics at the crash scene, which was near the intersection of Route 282 and Route 213 (Augustine Herman Highway), according to Maryland State Police. (That section of Route 213 is considered the 100 block of East Main Street in downtown Cecilton.)

Midash was transported to Union Hospital in Elkton for an unrelated issue, police reported.

The fatal crash occurred about 1:15 p.m. on Route 282, a short distance east of the intersection in Cecilton, police said. MSP investigators determined that a Nissan 350Z driven by Midash was traveling on Route 282, when the vehicle inexplicably veered off the road and struck a utility pole, which stands across the street from the Cecilton Volunteer Fire Co. station, police added.

The impact crushed the door on the passenger’s side, where Thompson had been seated.

With the assistance of a State Highway Administration crew, emergency workers shut down a short segment of Route 282 and directed traffic on the northbound and southbound lanes of Route 213, police said. An MSP accident reconstruction team handled the on-scene investigation, police added.

On Sunday, police reported that on-scene investigators “detected signs of possible impairment” from the driver. Then on Monday morning, MSP officials reported that “charges are pending the outcome of the investigation and consultation with the Cecil County State’s Attorney.”

The investigation is ongoing and MSP officials are asking anyone who might have witnessed the fatal crash to call the agency’s North East Barrack at 410-996-7800.

This marks Cecil County's first fatal crash of 2018. Last year, according to Cecil Whig archives and police, 30 motorists were killed in traffic accidents on Cecil County roads, a five-year high.
