Springfield, IL : Driver killed, children ejected in I-55 crash on Sunday, September 24th 2017
A driver was killed Sunday evening in a single-vehicle rollover crash on Interstate 55, and two children also were thrown from the vehicle.
Illinois State Police said that a 2005 Chevrolet Trailblazer was northbound at mile marker 95 when the crash occurred at 5:43 p.m. Witnesses said the Trailblazer appeared to swerve to the left and then back to the right. The vehicle hit the right ditch, rolled and struck two trees.
The driver and two children were thrown from the vehicle, and the driver died, police said. Two infants also were in the vehicle, but were secured in child safety seats. Police said the three thrown from the vehicle were not wearing seat belts.
The two children and two infants were taken to HSHS St. Johns Hospital. No update was available on their condition.
Police did not release the name of the driver, and no details were available about the driver’s relationship to the children.
The right lane of I-55 was shut down for about 45 minutes, police said.
