Chaska, MN: Three people were killed and two other were injured in crash on icy highways in Carver and Kandiyohi counties on Saturday, 15th November 2014
Three people were killed, including a child, on icy highways in Carver and Kandiyohi counties Saturday, the Minnesota State Patrol reported.
A 29-year-old woman from Lester Prairie, Minn., and a 7-year-old boy died in the crash on U.S. 212 in Carver County.
Two other people -- a 4-year-old boy and the 29-year-old male driver -- were seriously injured in the 1:15 p.m. crash.
A Pontiac Aztek was eastbound on icy U.S. 212, near milepost 141, when it lost control and went sideways, the State Patrol said. A Ford Ranger heading west struck the Aztek in the side.
The 33-year-old driver of the Ford was taken to Ridgeview Medical Center in Waconia with nonlife-threatening injuries, the State Patrol said.
There were multiple crashes on icy and snowy highways around Minnesota on Saturday. A persistent, light snow throughout the day and into the evening Saturday resulted in 1 to 2 inches of snow in the metro area, said Chris Franks, meteorologist at the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.
Next up is more cold: the high temperature probably won't reach 20 degrees in the metro area Sunday and the forecast calls for midteens Monday (overall, it's 20 to 25 degrees below normal for this time of year), Franks said.
A 49-year-old driver was killed in a crash in Kandiyohi County at 3:15 p.m. A Ford F-350 was heading northbound on an icy U.S. 71/Minnesota 23 bypass when it lost control, went off the road and rolled, the State Patrol reported.
A passenger, the driver's wife, apparently was uninjured.
In Stearns County, Interstate 94 was icy when a Dodge Dakota lost control, left the roadway and rolled, the State Patrol said. One person had a serious injury.
Two children, ages 3 and 5, had nonlife-threatening injuries when the vehicle they were passengers in on northbound Interstate 35 in Freeborn County hit an icy patch, lost control, ran off the road and rolled. Two adults in the vehicle also were not seriously injured.
Because of blowing snow in Nobles County, a driver didn't see a Minnesota Department of Transportation snowplow that was going slow and preparing to make a U-turn in a turnaround, the State Patrol said. The car rear-ended the plow.
The driver of the car and a 14-year-old passenger had nonlife-threatening injuries, and the plow driver was uninjured.
