Elmont, NY : 7th-grade girl struck and killed by a car walking to school on Monday morning, February 1, 2016
Authorities on Long Island say a seventh-grade girl has been struck and killed by a car while walking to school.
Police say the girl was struck as she walked across a busy street on her way to Elmont Memorial High School. The school serves students in 7th to 12th grade.
The victim was not immediately identified by police. The driver of the car also was not immediately identified. A police spokesman said there appeared to be no criminality.
Newsday reports the accident happened at the intersection of Elmont Road and Village Avenue in Elmont.
The Sewanhaka Central School District said grief counselors were available to students and staff.
