Sacramento,CA : Two men killed in early morning crash on July, Saturday 29th 2017

The two men who were killed in a multiple vehicle crash on the 118 Freeway over the weekend have been identified as Christopher Lombard of Simi Valley and Daniel Valencia Vaca of Moorpark.

Just after 4 a.m. July 29, 24-year-old Vaca was driving his silver Acura TSX west on the 118 Freeway west of Stearns Street when he collided with the back of a black Toyota Camry being driven by 38-year-old Hector Mora of Panorama City, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The crash caused Vaca’s Acura to overturn and land on its roof.

Lombard, 63, who was driving on the eastbound side of the 118 Freeway, saw the accident and pulled over. He got out of his car, crossed the center divider and was attempting to help Vaca when another car—a white Ford Fusion being driven by 22-yearold Moorpark resident Anthony Cota—struck the two men, said Officer Marco Marin of the CHP Moorpark Division.

Vaca and Lombard both died at the scene. Mora was not injured, while Cota suffered minor injuries, Marin said.

“This is a really sad and unfortunate event because (Lombard) was trying to help (Vaca), but it ended up costing him his life,” Marin said. “He was trying to do a good thing and it worked against him.

“Anytime you get pedestrians on the freeway with vehicles traveling at high speeds, it’s a very hazardous place to be, especially in the early morning hours with low-light conditions and people trying to either get to work or coming home from being out all night.”

It is unknown at this time whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the incident; no one was arrested, Marin said.

CHP officials fully closed the westbound side of the freeway for about two hours and diverted traffic off the highway onto Stearns Street.

At 6:21 a.m., the center median was reopened to allow traffic to pass the crash site, but all lanes remained closed until 7:51 a.m., when CHP concluded its investigation.

“Sadly, this collision again demonstrates the potential hazards associated with traffic collisions and being a pedestrian on the freeway,” R.D. Cohan, commander of the CHP Moorpark Division, said in a statement.

“Attentive, head-up driving and constant attention to traffic are absolute requirements for all of us when around traffic. Our condolences to the family and friends of (Vaca and Lombard).”
