St Helens, OR : Driver killed in crash on Hwy 30 in St. Helens after fleeing police on Thursday, 11th August, 2016
A driver fleeing from police died in a multi-vehicle crash on Highway 30 in St. Helens on Thursday after police tried to pull him over in Scappoose.
The crash closed the highway in both directions. All lanes have since been reopened. A woman in another car was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Police say the suspect was not wearing a seat belt and was ejected from the car.
"He hit the side curb and then like the car popped up in the air," said Chris Potter, who was working across the street and witnessed the crash. "I saw like half of his body hanging out the driver's window. Once he hit the embankment, his whole body was ejected and the car just went soaring and he was just flying."
Chief Terry Moss of the St. Helens Police Department said Scappoose police tried to pull the driver over but the driver wouldn't stop. After police started pursuing him he pulled over for a moment but then drove off again with police chasing him.
Oregon State Police said Scappoose police officers quit chasing the man in the interest of public safety. But the man, driving a Toyota Highlander, slammed into a back of a 2012 Honda Civic driven by the woman near Millard Road and Highway 30 in St. Helens. The woman's car went across three lanes of traffic and crashed through a fence, stopping in someone's yard.
Officials said it all started as a traffic complaint just minutes before 1 p.m. and occurred over a time period of about three minutes.
The names of the people involved in the crash have not yet been released, pending notification of family members.
