Gillette, WY : Three people were killed Wednesday in an eight-vehicle collision on state Route 59 south of Gillette on May 14, 2014
Three people died when a bus carrying 24 people plowed into a line of vehicles stopped at a highway construction zone about 10 miles south of Gillette, Wyo., on Wednesday.
The Wyoming Highway Patrol has not released the names of those killed when a Powder River Transport bus collided with a line of northbound vehicles. The cars were waiting for a pilot car escort near mile marker 99 on U.S. Highway 59 at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday.
Two of the people who died were in one vehicle and the third was alone, according to a highway patrol news release.
At least three people from other vehicles were taken to the hospital. No one on the bus was seriously injured, according to the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Traffic was stopped on each end of the construction area that was well marked with signs, speed reduction signs and flaggers.
The bus was traveling at a high rate of speed when it collided with the waiting vehicles. No charges have been filed so far, but the accident is under investigation, according to the release.
"While it is difficult for most to fathom, this kind of crash, where a driver collides with stopped vehicles on an open roadway with no foul weather and clear visibility, occurs all too frequently," said highway patrol Maj. Perry Jones.
Jones said drivers need to pay attention to work zone signs and signals. "Slow down, stay off the phone and buckle up," Jones said.
