Stuart, FL : Lake Park man dead in a hit-and-run accident on Interstate 95 in Martin County early Sunday morning, June 5, 2016
Interstate 95 was shut down in both directions in Martin County early Sunday morning as a hit-and-run accident left a Lake Park man dead.
Lawrence Melvin Alkema, 68, of Lake Park was killed after his 1996 Ford Ranger pickup was struck from behind by a 2015 Jaguar XF, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Alkema’s pickup veered off the highway and overturned. The driver of the Jaguar fled on foot after the car became inoperable a short distance away.
The owner of the Jaguar, Jack Edward Brown, 48, of Deerfield Beach, was captured by FHP investigators in Stuart and has retained an attorney after being taken to a local hospital, FHP spokesman Mark Wysocky said.
The accident and resulting pursuit forced I-95 to be closed in both directions at 4:40 a.m. between Bridge Road near Hobe Sound and Okeechobee Road in Fort Pierce.
Northbound lanes opened before 9 a.m. on Sunday, while southbound lanes still weren’t reopened to traffic until after 11 a.m.
