A tree worker was killed and another was injured after being hit by a car in a work zone Thursday morning.

The Aberdeen Times reported the incident happened around 8 a.m. on Plank Road near North Rockingham Street.

A witness told The Aberdeen Times that the workers were with a private company that was contracted by the North Carolina Department of Transportation. The witness told the paper that the workers were setting up a wood chipper when they were hit.

The Aberdeen Times reported the worker who was killed was 50-year-old Tony Wood from Hamptonville, North Carolina.

One of the workers was declared dead at the scene, the Aberdeen Times reported. The paper reported that the second victim was airlifted to a hospital.

The name of the other victim and driver involved were not immediately released.
