Helena, MT : One dead after car crashes lake near Helena on Wednesday October 19th 2016
The body of 33 year old Joseph Smietanka from Clancy was recovered Wednesday night after a vehicle failed to negotiate a curve on Dry Gulch Road
and ended up in Cox Lake.
Cox Lake is about three miles south of Helena, near the intersection of Dry Gulch Drive and Arrastra Gulch Road.
The only other passenger, a female in her mid thirties, was injured but was able to go to nearby residence to call the incident in herself. She was transported to the hospital and treated for bruising and hypothermia. Her identity is yet to be released.
Authorities recovered the white 1999 Subaru Outback from Cox lake this afternoon and are continuing to investigate the cause of the accident and who was behind the wheel. Montana Highway Patrol Trooper Mike Zufelt says at this time, it appears there was no foul play and that speed and alcohol may have played a factor.
