NEW ALBANY, IN : 2 killed in 5-vehicle crash after large sinkhole causes traffic diversion on Wednesday, 22nd May 2019

A five-vehicle crash left two people dead and three others injured in New Albany Wednesday morning, Indiana State Police said.

The crash happened shortly after 8 a.m. near the 3.4 mile-marker of eastbound I-265. Traffic was being diverted from I-265 to Charlestown Road after a large sinkhole developed in the roadway overnight.

As vehicles slowed during the rush hour traffic, police said a 2011 International DuraStar work truck failed to stop and rear-ended a 2008 Chevrolet pickup truck. The crash caused a chain reaction and a total of five vehicles were involved.

One of the vehicles struck was a maroon 2000 Ford F-150 pickup truck. Both the driver and the passenger inside that truck were killed in the crash. They have been identified as Douglas Borders, 42, and Christina Coy, 36, both of Scottsburg, Ind.

Three other people were taken to nearby hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.
