DURHAM, NC : 1 driver charged with felony, DWI after Durham crash kills NCCU freshman on April, Sunday 9th 2017

Police have charged a 25-year-old woman with felony death by vehicle in connection with a Sunday night wreck that killed a passenger in another car and injured other people in her car and the driver of the other vehicle.

Natasha Lynn Taylor was charged early Monday and held in the Durham County Detention Center in lieu of $250,000 bail. She also was charged with driving while impaired and failing to maintain lane control.

Police said the crash occurred in the 1100 block of East Geer Street just after 9:30 p.m. when Taylor’s eastbound car crossed a double yellow line and hit a westbound vehicle that Quillon Rendleman, 18, of Charlotte was driving.

Myiah Andrews, 18, of Greenville, a freshman at North Carolina Central University, died at the scene, police said. She had been riding with Rendleman.

NCCU will host a vigil to mourn the death of Andrews this evening, April 10, at 5:30 p.m. in the university’s Library Bowl, located in front of the James E. Shepard Memorial Library at 1801 Fayetteville Street.

Police said Taylor, Rendleman and two other passenger’s in his vehicle were treated for injuries that did not appear to be life threatening. NCCU identified the two additionally involved students as, Jeremiah Phronebarger and Celi Smith. As of Monday morning, one NCCU student was still being treated in a local hospital.

Police shut down East Geer Street from Cheek Road to Essex Road for a time while they compiled a report on the accident.

“I would ask that you keep Ms. Andrews family, friends and classmates in your thoughts and prayers during their time of grief,” wrote NCCU interim chancellor Johnson Akinleye. “The sudden passing of a promising young person who was just beginning her journey is indeed heartbreaking and causes us to lean on one another for strength as members of a unified Eagle family.”

Prior to her death, Andrews had been studying health care as a pre-nursing major and was active in the NCCU campus chapter of the National Council of Negro Women. She enrolled at NCCU after graduating from South Central High School located in Winterville, N.C.

“As our community begins to deal with this deep loss, counselors from Student Health and Counseling Services are available in the Student Health Building, as well as in McLean Residence Hall,” Akinleye wrote. “We also have leaders from the Office of Spiritual Development and Dialogue available to assist with any grief counseling. More details will be shared once they become available.”
