A Cape Coral woman was arrested Monday as a suspect in a hit-and-run crash that hurt a boy riding a scooter.

Laura Ashley Wood remains in Lee County Jail on five charges, including three hit-and-run charges and two moving traffic violations. She will be arraigned Feb. 19.

Cape Coral police were called to the 1100 block of NE 9 Street on Monday afternoon for a hit-and-run crash where a black Kia Soul hit an 8-year-old boy riding a scooter.

Police said the Kia stopped, the driver got out and then fled the scene in the vehicle while a witness gave chase. After about five minutes, the witness lost the suspect's vehicle.

Police were able to get several interviews and collect physical evidence at the scene, including civilian dash-camera footage that caught the car fleeing the scene and driving recklessly.

Officers located the suspected vehicle dumped behind a nearby business.and found the suspect, identified as Wood, at her home.


The 8-year-old victim suffered serious, multiple non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital.

Police said that the and his 9-year-old sister were riding separate scooters back and forth across the street between two driveways. The sister made it across when the boy rode directly into the front of the Kia.
